U4 Special Subject Investigation for Creative Media Production

Aim

This unit aims to enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding of a chosen

aspect of creative media production and your skills in researching and presenting an individual

Investigation.

Unit abstract

The creative media sector provides a wide range of technical, professional and academic areas of

interest for development.

This unit provides the opportunity for learners to identify a particular area of study or practice and

develop a proposal and set specific objectives for investigation.

You will apply research skills to the identification and selection of materials and resources

and present the results of this investigation in a way that suits the chosen subject and their own

learning style.

I decided to study a couple of different practices within the game development industry, two of which I have a keen interest for, these being Writing and 3D modelling.

During the process of starting up our game studio, Strafe Studios, we started developing ideas for a sci fi game with a deep universe of characters, locations and aliens. I wanted to base the universe of this project in the real universe, like Star Trek or Halo, with locations that exist in real life while also adding to it with planets, events and speculative futures that people can still relate to while also being a creative take on historical events that haven't happened yet. I took strong inspiration from Halo and Star Trek when designing the human society in the distant future. I studied different government structures to understand what the most realistic hierarchy would be for a government that controlled a large number of colonies. This process was a lot of fun because it allowed me to analyse the different military branches and how they'd work in cohesion with each other and how they'd interact with the governing body.

I looked at creating characters that the player will interact with and created mood boards for the concept artist to use as a base a design off of. In this process I decide how the character sounds and how they interact with other characters
